Good design that saves lives! Tailored for diabetics
Diabetes is a chronic disease with a high incidence, especially among middle-aged and elderly people. The prevalence of elderly people over 60 years old exceeds 20%. However, there is no cure for diabetes. Therefore, many patients need long-term insulin injections to control their condition.
For many underdeveloped areas, most pharmacies choose which insulin to supply, but with different types of insulin, the dosage will be changed, and patients need to go to a professional institution to determine their required dosage, which is time-consuming and expensive .
Canadian designer Evan McDougall conducted a two-month study on this special situation, including academic research, competitive product analysis, expert interviews, and usage scenario analysis. The latest design of Banting was completed, which is a model that allows diabetics to use any Home medical products of type insulin.
Banting is named after Dr. Fredrick Banting, one of the discoverers of insulin, and aims to allow patients who cannot continue to use the same type of insulin to use any type of insulin conveniently.
Banting consists of two parts: an insulin pen and a monitor. Before injection, enter the current blood sugar level and consumed carbohydrates into the monitor, and the calculated and corrected insulin dose will be displayed on the screen; then rotate the insulin pen to expose the needle, insert it into the injection site, and press the top button to inject; after the injection is complete, The user confirms the current dose on the monitor, and an automatic notification will be sent out when the next injection is needed.
For medical equipment, hygiene is the most important design factor. There is a thin film on the tip of the insulin pen, and the pen is rotated to allow the needle to pass through. This innovative design can prevent the needle from being contaminated and ensure hygiene during use.
